Alice

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I read this poem this morning and this afternoon the news came that Alice Garmon had quietly slipped into heaven last night. My grandmother’s dear friend and a second gramma to the five of us grandkids. She was the kind of bold, brassy, broad that gave life to living. Her laugh was quick and she tucked smiles in all the lines of her face. Her spirit imprinted upon my heart when I was a girl. The kind of footprint that oceans of time cannot sweep away. Dear Aunt Alice gone. Nothing gold can stay, but the goodbyes never get easier.
